What Are The Opportunities ?
The most obvious opportunity for investment in Nepal is in the hydropower energy. The steeply declining rivers have the capability to produce a great deal of electrical power if harnessed correctly. In addition to unquenched demand for electricity within Nepal, there is strong and growing demand in India for electricity.
Given reasonable power purchasing arrangements with the NEA (Nepal Electricity Authority) – currently ranging from NRs. 4.80 (US 7 cents) /kWh (kilowatt hour) to NRs.8.40 (US 11 cents)/ kWh depending on the season of generation - and reasonable construction costs - there is certainly scope for good returns on investment. Several highly profitable projects have recently been developed in Nepal and neighboring Bhutan. Other opportunities involve the tourist industry, other electrical generation (wind etc.), cement production, labor intensive projects and alternative fuel.
